TO NOLA AND BACK!

All right. Back from New Orleans, back in action. Spent the week laying down vocal tracks for the new album. You know, we don't have a title for the new album---the main release, not the EP. Have to come up with something. The acoustic CD is called "Children At Play" and it is a good one, a crackerjack.

Jordan's prom is on Friday--but most of the work for that is done. We just need to get photos. We'll both be dressed up, hah! I'll be wearing my stage clothes and she'll be wearing her prom clothes. Then she'll head off and I'll head to Freehold to Aanagan for a show. I love playing Aanagan--first of all its a great venue, and second of all the food is lovely. Chef Ash is the guy who prepares everything, and the things he does with vegetarian ingredients have to be tasted to be believed.

I just feel so totally like I have my batteries recharged. Its a good feeling. My heart was breaking when I left NOLA--I wish i could live there, stay there, but I can't. And New Jersey is nice too. Oh well, maybe someday....

Love,

Lady E

Interview with Danny Coleman for the Trentonian

For The Trentonian Posted: 05/03/12 07:33 am

Welcome to my musical world! This is one man’s attempt to alert you to the best in area entertainment!

Eryn Shewell was born in Washington D.C and moved to New Jersey when she was very young; what a gain for the Garden State that has turned out to be! I can describe this East Windsor resident in many ways, but I always seem to sum it up best when I say, “The lady can just flat out sing!” When you first meet this young artist with the soft speaking voice, one would never expect the power that lurks within. The first time that I ever saw Shewell perform was several years ago at a festival. I remember being under a large tent that doubled as the musicians green room on this hot, sticky day when I saw a pair of high heels come cautiously down the small slope that led to where we were at the bottom. Little did I know that this young lady, dressed more appropriately for a vintage Bogart movie than an outdoor festival, was about to bring the “WOW” factor into play. Upon taking the stage, her presence dominated the cast of top-notch performers that make up her fine band, which, I can assure you is no easy task. Shewell’s stunning vocal ability, vivacious and (at times) back in time looks command attention. When this woman belts out a tune, people can’t help but take notice. Eryn’s vocals can seemingly transport her audience to another era, a simpler time perhaps, where she can go as soft as a song bird, or as powerful as a freight train as she delivers her brand of original music mixed with apropos blues and jazz standards that leave the crowd craving more. I found it hard to believe after recent conversations with her that she only took vocal lessons for a few months. “I started singing, well, I was kind’a born into it (laughing),” she said. “My family are all musicians, very musical. I took vocal lessons briefly from (Asbury Park area’s) Jody Joseph, but no other (formal) vocal lessons.” Even though her voice may be considered her primary instrument, Eryn also writes her material on her guitar. I was surprised to discover that she’d only been playing for a short time. “I started playing about five years ago,” she said. “I’ve never taken a lesson. If there’s something that I’m having trouble with I just ask (her guitarist) Pat (Ruh).” After two modestly successful CDs and the recent completion of “Children At Play,” a live acoustic CD, which captures Shewell in pure, raw talent form, Eryn is far from done making music. Currently, she is in the recording studio laying down ten new tracks that will make up her fourth disc. This still yet untitled effort will be “Scaled back” in an attempt to “Keep it simple,” says Shewell. “I’m in the process of recording and trying to raise the money to pay for this,” she said. “I released a single and a live video of a new song, ‘Boy Like You’ that I co-wrote with Alice Leon that’s probably going to be on the disc.” I asked her how the relationship with a very accomplished musician such as Leon came about. “I was a fan of hers when I was younger,” she said. “My dad used to take me to see her when I was a kid. We connected on facebook and now we’ve written a couple of songs together.” On writing her music she says, “Every song is different. Sometimes I write lyrics first, sometimes it’s the music first. Sometimes they both come together at the same time. It’s always different. I think it gives me my diverse style.....(laughing) I don’t know if that’s good or bad!” What does the future hold for this talented songstress? With a hearty laugh Shewell said, “I wish I knew! I’m looking to promote the new CD and my music overseas. I’m looking into finding a booking agent to do a European tour. I’m also hoping that people buy the CD and like it!” The immediate future is very busy for Eryn and the band. The day after I interviewed her for this column, she left for a week long tour that will take her to various stops in one of her favorite cities -- New Orleans. “I love going down there,” she said. “I try to make it at least once, if not twice a year. We’ll be playing across from where the jazz fest is being held again this year at several places, then we’ll be making stops in Nashville and North Carolina on our way back.” A very hard working musician both on stage and off, Shewell sets up these tours and gigs all on her own without the aide of a manager. I’ve been fortunate enough to see Shewell numerous times as well as interview her on several occasions. I can sit here and write about how amazingly powerful her voice is, how talented she is, how great she looks on stage and how she can take over any setting, but none of the words will do her justice. My suggestion is to listen to her music which is available on CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon.com and from her directly at www.erynshewell.com , go see her live, then let me know if I am wrong. I’m betting that I’m not. Eryn Shewell plays shows all over our area from Princeton, to the Jersey shore, in New York City and beyond. Believe me when I say, check her and her band out, it’s well worth the trip! Some shows worth checking out this weekend are Friday, Beannacht with Lo Kloza and Jeff Rupert at the Grover’s Mill Coffee House located at 335 Princeton-Hightstown Rd. in West Windsor. Stop on by and have a cup of java along with some fantastic sweet treats as you listen to these superb singer/ songwriters in an intimate setting. The show is an early start time of 7:30 p.m., is family/kid friendly and admission is free. Another all ages show on Friday is Billy Hector at The Record Collector in Bordentown. Join this great artist as he plays his versions of the blues in The Record collector’s “Living Room” setting. The Record Collector is located at 358 Farnsworth Ave. and tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Coming up next week, May 11, the third installment of the now monthly “Singer/Songwriter Night” at Cedar Gardens Pub will be taking place. This month’s lineup is as diverse as it is talented. Stay tuned and check back here next week as there will be more information forthcoming. That’s it for now. So until next week, please continue to support live and original music, your local musicians and as always...ROCK ON!

CAREERISM...

It was rainy on Sunday. Rainy dream away. Days like that always make me think of that tune--that and "1983, a Merman I Should Turn To Be". I actually went to Harpin' Help later that evening and played a family gig--my Uncle George's 60th.

Family is always fun. Taxing at times, but fun.

I'm always looking for more paying work, more students to teach...sometimes I wonder if I am on the right path as an artist, but then I think about my brief stint doing retail and I realize I am. Sometimes living out a dream--you give up security sometimes, for the dream. It seems like that is the trade off. You look at great artists like Mapplethorpe or Annie Leibowitz or Jimi Hendrix or Aretha or Mick Jagger and Keith Richards--Mick and Keith cranked out their best tunes while living in a dilapidated, mouse infested flat in London--they didn't achieve real security financially until they were already quite famous and established. Some artists never do no matter how famous and established they get.

Look at Sharon Jones--the woman who plays with the Dap Kings. She does all right, I'm sure, now, but even years of cult favorite status didn't bring her wealth. Or Shirley Horn--she did all right, but she wasn't on the level of a movie star--and she had terrible medical problems with diabetes--by all standards, I'm pretty lucky. I'm young, I still have energy to go all night every night, my health is good, I have a large support network.

I guess I really ought to be grateful for the career I do have and start from there and see where that gets me.

Well, the little one and my sis are on Spring Break, which means I have the place to myself. I'm going out tonight to be with friends. Had dinner with my Dad--also a singer--last night. So good! We had Indian @ Delhi 6 in East Windsor. Stayed close to home. No gigs until Friday, but I'm always looking for more work. It's a long way to the top...I hope I get there someday, sometimes it feels like the grind is grinding me up. Wine to deal with that! Chez Chardonnay!

Last night was such a great gig. I didn't get to bed until 5 AM though. Then I had to wake up at 8 to drive back home! I came home and slept a bit more but I'm still sooo exhausted. Now I gotta get ready and go to NY. Looooong weekend. On the other hand, I am an active, working musician with records out and selling, so how can I complain? [smile]. See you at the Bitter End!

Having an awesome time in the studio. Patty is rocking out, laying down some tracks. I feel so at home in a studio. I love the way this album is turning out. It's bluesier, countrier, motown-er, and more eminently soulful than we've ever done it. Ever. Don't believe it? Check out the photo.

ST. PATTY'S DAY, IN THE EVENING...

ST. PATTY'S DAY! Well, i guess we're ALL Irish today. I'll be playing the Triumph Brewery Company in Princeton, really looking forward to playing there. It's a green day near the beginning of Spring. You know, the hot summer nights are the best for the blues, but I like the Spring just fine. The world is born again, everything seems new and alive after the winter. Colors--the very existence of the world seems deeper and richer and more vibrant. Spring and Fall are times when everything has a fine, sharp clarity, unlike Winter when everything is hard and cold and numb and raw, and Summer, when everything is so soft it all bleeds together. Spring is a time that usually helps me get some perspective on my life--where I'm going, what I'm doing, what my plans are. I'm glad its coming and its almost here.

THINKING ABOUT MY DAUGHTER, MY RESPONSIBILITIES, LIFE IN GENERAL...

Playing Aanagan tonight. I'll try to post a couple of photos if I can. Last night I spent the evening at home, with my daughter and my sister. Do you know how often I get to do that? Just about never. Never ever. Felt so good to unwind and just be us girls! It was a good evening and a good night. Tonight should be a really good gig. Planning to break out some new material.

When my daughter was born, I knew my life had changed--for the better. But on the other hand, I did not understand the responsibility at that time. I'm not sure I completely understand it now, other than to say it is a responsibility to another human being that is profound--more than words can express or say. Words are not the right tool to convey the depth of responsibility. They say that nothing can prepare you for motherhood, and that is the truth. But I will say this: It's not just for me that I want to make it as a singer and a songwriter and a guitar player and an artist.

Happy 70th Birthday Bob Dylan! My New Bob Dylan Single!

Hello all!

We have just released a Bob Dylan single for radio to go along with his 70th Birthday!! Right now it’s being played on Philly radio WXPN and other NJ stations. The song is “You Angel You” from Bob’s Planet Waves album. It' will be released for sale on a Bob Dylan compilation album this summer. WXPN is gifting it to him for his birthday and will be hosting an event at World Café Live with all the different artists on the album. They previously did a compilation for Bruce Springsteen and he ended up being the guest of honor at the concert. Let’s hope that Bob wants to come join us as well!

So I chose this song “You Angel You” because it really reminded me of the love I have for my daughter. I think it’s a beautiful song that can be dedicated to a child. So I did this one for my little girl Emily.

Here is a link so you can take a listen! http://soundcloud.com/eryn-shewell/you-angel-you

Thanks everyone!

Eryn Shewell Returns To New Orleans, Her Home Away From Home

(ASBURY PARK, NJ -- FEBRUARY 12, 2011) -- Eryn Shewell knows what it means to miss New Orleans. The award-winning artist blends rock, jazz, blues, and soul together in the same way the sounds can be heard throughout The Big Easy on any given night. She fell in love with the city when she first performed on a New Orleans stage a few years ago, and has returned for four tours of the city. This March, she'll return for a fifth.

"New Orleans is the greatest city in the world," said Shewell. "A home away from home. I never feel more like myself than when I'm down there. Beautiful culture and a beautiful city. I hope to someday move there."

Four dates have already scheduled and more are expected to be added shortly. Dates include:

March 2nd - Neutral Ground Coffee, 5110 Danneel Street
March 6th - Cafe Negril, 606 Frenchmen Street
March 7th - Cafe Negril, 606 Frenchmen Street
March 10th - Checkpoint Charlies, 501 Esplanade Avenue

In previous trips, Shewell has shared the stage with artists like Walter Wolfman Washington, Eric Lindell, The Soul Project, and Saaraba. She's also shared bills with Marcia Ball, Sonny Landreth, The Radiators, John Hammond, Johnny A, and Shannon McNally. An adopted member of the New Orleans music community, she lent a hand to the latest record by Walter Wolfman Washington during one trip.

Shewell's most recent release, 4th & Broadway, was released at the end of 2009. She has been nominated for several Asbury Music Awards within the past few years and took home the award for Top Female Vocalist in 2009.

Millenium Music Conference

My team and I attended the Millenium Music Conference this last weekend and had a great time. I had never been to a conference before so I was not sure what to expect. Pat and I were able to perform "Don't You See" before a singer/songwriter panel and we had great feedback on the song and of course Pat's guitar playing! I was able to sit down with several industry professionals and get their thoughts on my music, the feedback was all extremely positive - so it looks like we are doing all the right things. On Saturday night the band performed at Malone's along with some other very talented female singers. I was particularly impressed with Margot MacDonald. Everyone should check her out. All in all we had a very productive two days handing out many cd's to industry professionals and making some new friends. Many thanks to all the people who worked so hard to put on this conference!
